Renewing Your Mexican Passport: What You Need to Know

Last updated: August 2026

Renewing a Mexican passport is considerably easier than applying for the first time, because your previous passport serves as the primary proof of your identity and citizenship. Even so, a little preparation makes the difference between a quick visit and a wasted trip.

When to renew

You can renew at any time, but the sweet spot is within the last twelve months of validity. Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry, so waiting until the last minute can disrupt travel plans. If your passport has already expired, the renewal process is essentially the same — you simply bring the expired document.

Documents for renewal

If your passport was lost or stolen rather than simply expired, the process involves an additional report — see our lost or stolen passport guide before booking.

How the renewal works

  1. Schedule an appointment online or by phone, exactly as with a first-time application.
  2. Pay the fee at an authorized bank or through the official online channel, and keep the receipt.
  3. Attend in person. The office captures a new photograph and fingerprints, verifies your old passport and prints the new one, usually the same day.

Your old passport is typically cancelled and returned to you. Keep it, especially if it contains valid visas — many countries allow you to travel with a valid visa in a cancelled passport alongside your new one.

Renewing from abroad

Mexican consulates process passport renewals in the country where you live. The documents are broadly the same, but appointment systems and payment methods differ by consulate, so check your consulate’s own instructions before you go.
